My series of works DB1 has to do with the depiction of the said fabric, exploring its status as a pervasive contemporary icon. Denim for me is not just as an iconic fabric, but as a "controversial classic"—a material that carries a complex narrative. It follows a journey as the uniform of the working class to its current place as a global global fashion staple.
By focusing in on its colors, textures and forms, my denim paintings confront the fabric's duality: its undeniable cultural appeal and massive production, and its contemporary status as a contributor to environmental disaster. The series uses denim to examine how a single material can embody apparent democratic wearability with profound contradictions in modern consumerism.
